Three steps, no account, no login. After this your phone backs up every time you walk through your front door.
You will need:
No cables, no USB, no Bluetooth. Everything happens over Wi-Fi.
Download the Home Disks installer for Windows and run it. The installer takes about a minute. When it finishes, the app appears as a small icon in your system tray (the area near the clock at the bottom-right of your screen).
Right-click the tray icon to choose where your backups are stored. The default is fine for most people.
Open Google Play on your phone and search for "Home Disks," or tap the download link on this site. Install and open the app.
The app will ask for permission to access your photos and contacts. Grant these so it knows what to back up.
On the PC app, right-click the tray icon and choose "Pair." A QR code appears on your screen.
In the Android app, tap "Scan QR code" and point your camera at the screen. The two devices pair instantly — no typing, no passwords, no email.
Your first backup starts automatically. You can watch the progress in the app or just put your phone down.
From now on, every time you walk through your front door and connect to Wi-Fi, your photos back up automatically. Open the app twice a year and it will tell you everything is safe.
The first backup copies everything, so it takes the longest. Keep your phone on Wi-Fi and plugged in if possible. After that, daily backups are fast because only new files are copied.
Some phone manufacturers aggressively kill background apps. If backups are not running, go to Settings > Battery > Home Disks and choose "Unrestricted" or "Don't optimise." The app will guide you through this on first setup.
The PC app runs quietly in the system tray. If you close it, backups will queue on your phone until it is opened again. For best results, enable "Start at login" in the tray menu.
